Christmas lunch brings community together

09 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
CHRISTMAS day on the West Tamar was made special by a small group of selfless volunteers.

The Christmas Lunch With Friends annual event ran for the seventh time this year and was attended by 84 people - a rise on last year's successful turnout, according to Christmas with Friends Group secretary Therese Cochrane.

"They all said it was excellent," Mrs Cochrane said.

"What we do is put out some Christmasy placemats where people can put down their feedback."

She said the Sing Elon City of Launceston International Children's Choir was a highlight of the day.

"The choir did some of the traditional songs like Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and more - they entertained us for about half an hour," she said.

"They also did some songs from South America and Africa that were traditional songs in those countries to give us a taste of what they would be singing when they go away on tour."

She said it wasn't just single people who were welcome at the function.

"We do have some couples, this time we had a few families which were new to the area ... it's not just a single person thing, a unit who doesn't have anyone else is also welcome."

The traditional turkey, ham, baked vegetables and pudding lunch was made possible by the group's fund- raising efforts as well as some generous donations.

"We get a fair bit of support from the West Tamar Council - I think this year we got a bit over $900 from them," she said.

The Tamar Valley Resort also helped raise funds for the event.
