Getting tough on fire starters

09 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
CRIME Stoppers Tasmania has urged members of the public to report all cases of arson.

The organisation has issued its message following the release of the Sentencing Council Consultation Paper on Arson and Intentionally Lit Fires.

At this year's Crime Stoppers Australian conference, bushfire arson was a main topic of concern.

Crime Stoppers Tasmania chairman David Daniels said bushfires had a much larger impact than people realised.

Displacement, crop destruction, homelessness and the blazing of native wildlife and its habitat occur.

"Can you identify a person, or vehicle, you observed near the area where a fire occurred, of do you know of someone who has been lighting fires?" Mr Daniels said.

"People regularly think that their piece of information is too small to be of value, however, we urge them to call as their piece of information may be that missing piece."

To report arson, or intentionally lit fires call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
