Group weeds out invasive species

07 Sep, 2010 10:29 AM
DURING Weedbusters Week, Tamar Natural Resource Management and the local community will go on a Boneseed Blitz.

The theme for this year's Weedbusters Week, held from September 6 to 12, is prevention and early detection.

Boneseed has been declared a weed of national significance and is native to South Africa.

It can grow up to 3metres high, with each plant producing 50,000 seeds, and can grow in a wide range of habitats including riparian, bushland and coastal.

Tamar NRM facilitator Mike Poole said the group had been running its Boneseed Blitz in conjunction with Weedbusters Week for seven years and was making steady progress.

"Boneseed is quite widespread, although the activities in the last few years have started to make an impact in reducing the area or have slowed its growth down," Mr Poole said.

"Our long-term goal is to eliminate it, but if you leave it unchecked it has got the potential to infest the Tamar Valley.

"It is a highly invasive plant and it mainly crowds out native species, which then acts back on your biodiversity."

Throughout the Boneseed Blitz, Tamar NRM has organised community-based activities to try to pull out and destroy as many plants as possible.

"We put out a call, the community groups ring in and we co-ordinate it all," he said.

"This year we have been able to get a little bit of funding to give vouchers of $50 to community groups to use towards buying gloves or secateurs.

"We have also got a little bit for money for community groups to hold a barbecue if they wish, so they can finish the day off with a feed."
