IT'S about giving something back and a passion for boats, according to Tamar Sea Rescue flotilla commander Henry Jacobs.
Mr Jacobs celebrated his 80th birthday last month and still remains on call 24-7 after 25 years of service to the volunteer organisation.
The rescue group, made of 18 people based at Beauty Point, have helped countless seafarers - from stranded yachts during bad weather in the Bass Strait to fuel stand-by runs for boats entering the Tamar River.
They have been successful in gaining a community grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund for a new trailer towing four- wheel-drive and are looking at bigger developments in the near future.
"Up until we got the vehicle we had trouble towing the boat out - not all of us have a vehicle capable of towing a boat of this size," Mr Jacobs said.
He said the group had originally received a grant in the vicinity of $7000, but had found a good car which the funds would not cover.
A phone call and a bit of negotiation soon saw the grant increased to $10,000 and a reliable means for towing.
The organisation is always looking for more hands on deck and is willing to supply information to people who hold an interest in its operations.
