 Povery task raises funds

Povery task raises funds

27 Jul, 2010 09:29 AM
THIS week a group of young people in the West Tamar will live below the international poverty line - surviving on $2 a day for their meals.

Live Below the Line is a national initiative that will see people following in the footsteps of the more than one billion people who face poverty on a daily basis.

The team is spearheaded by Exeter High School student Tegan Lumsden.

Tegan said she was not worried but excited about the money restraints ahead of her.

"I am not too concerned that I will be hungry or run out of food," she said.

Tegan said she had planned her two weeks of meals and had $6 remaining.

It is the first time the initiative will be held in Australia and soon will be trialled on an international basis.

The council's youth development officer Stewart Bell will join the group during the week.

"Our (Youth Advisory Council) members are very committed to the cause and have been actively promoting and fund-raising in their schools," Mr Bell said.

The group has already raised more than $400.

"We want to raise awareness and fund- raise to help Australians understand the challenges faced by those living in extreme poverty, and raise funds for education programs that can reduce the number of people living in extreme poverty," he said.

On the final day of the week members participating will join their daily allowance together and splurge on a meal and movie.
