Pure and simple living

13 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
West Tamar Councillor Peter Kaye believes social media is the key to promoting the Tamar region. As JAMES BRADY discovered.

Who are you?

I asked myself the same question many times, I'm just someone trying to do the right thing.

Where do you live?

I live in Trevallyn, it's as good as it gets.

Every night I watch the news I cross a country off the list of places I want to go - anyone who complains about living in Tasmania is joking.

There's nothing you can want that isn't here.

When did you come to the region?

I came here in 1974 expecting to stay six months - it's been a long six months.

What do you like about the region?

It's got everything, its just good, pure and simple - very few nasty people live in this area.

Where is your favourite place to visit?

Stanley, I just love it - I'd live there in a heart beat.

I think it's a really nice fishing village, wonderful atmosphere just a pleasant place.

What is your favourite thing to do?

I love horse racing, I enjoy the punt.

How do you think people can best promote the area?

Just by telling their family that they live here.

A lot of people have moved here from interstate after visiting friends - a real key marketing area is the fact that you can spread the word about this place.

A lot of people use social media these days, it's an opportunity we overlook and never use, consequently we're worse off for it.

If more people were to to visit the place it would absolutely boom, tell your family and friends who have never been to the place how much you love living here and encourage them to visit.

What is the best part of living in a small community?

I think it's the safety aspect, I really believe that it just feels safe - I've never felt threatened in this place, ever.

It's not a hard place to live, it may not be a place to become a multi-millionaire although a lot of people have.

Which side of the Tamar is the best and why?

I think both sides have a lot going for them because I live here I like it better, I've always lived on this side of the river, I've never lived on the east side of the Tamar.

The riverscape on the west side is prettier, not to condemn the eastern side.

Every place serves a purpose - the reason they zoned all the land on the eastern side was to encourage industry and employment, with it comes an inevitable downside as it is not as pretty.
