THE West Tamar Council has written to Education Minister Nick McKim and Premier Lara Giddings to show its support for keeping the School for Seniors building in High Street, Launceston.
The council forwarded a motion in its November meeting to send a letter following reports that the school's High Street facility could face closure and be relocated to 51 York Street.
West Tamar Mayor Barry Easther said concern arose when the Education Department changed the conditions on its lease of the building.
"When you change a clause in the lease, it's a fair indication that it's in their thinking," Cr Easther said.
"If it's in their thinking then it's more likely to happen than not to happen."
The letter said the York Street premises would not be suitable for a number of reasons, including the lack of free or economical parking nearby.
"It would be a totally unsuitable move for the people involved in the School for Seniors," Cr Easther said.
"Car parking, access issues - the building is old and unsuitable for the types of activities taken by the school."
Mr McKim said he made a commitment to review the three Learning Information Network Centre facilities and to consider the future needs of the community.
He met with school chairman Barry Lumley late October at the High Street building.
"I have ensured the School for Seniors that they will be involved in decisions made regarding the future of the building," Mr McKim said.
The Department of Education is expected to make a decision following a review of a condition and suitability report of the Launceston properties.
