Students use voices for national singalong

31 Aug, 2010 09:58 AM
MORE than 500 Port Dalrymple School students will add their voices to the millions all over Australia taking part in Music: Count Us In on September 2 to promote the importance of music in education.

The event is the brainchild of musician John Ford, and will see schools from all over Australia sing the same song at 11.30am.

Port Dalrymple music teacher Bronwyn Gibson said the school had taken part for the past three years, changing its involvement each time.

"One year we had a sports carnival that day so we put it over the PA and all had a sing," she said.

"The first year we had a big music celebration assembly and this year we're bringing the whole school together, with all the students and teachers, which we've never done before."

Mrs Gibson said she also hoped to hook the school's system up to schools in Sydney and Melbourne, who do live streams from the Opera House and Federation Square, so that pupils could get a sense of the event's nationwide following.

"It's a really fantastic opportunity to sing together and be part of something that all of Australia is doing," she said.

"It's to promote music education in schools and get students who no longer do music to get back involved in music."
